General Q. Didn't the QuickCalc tools used to
be free?
A. Yes they did - during
the development phase. The development of the tools required
the support of the benefits and advice community. In return the
tools were freely distributed. The tools have now become an established
part of the workplace for many hundreds of users and QuickCalc
is now a limited company - registered at Companies House.
Q. How
do we pay for QuickCalc?
A. Once you have submitted
your on-line order (see main page) you will receive a full invoice
by email attachment. It contains all the usual info to allow
you to pay by cheque, BACS transfer, on-line bank payment.
Q. Do
we have to pay before we can get onto the system?
A. No. Once you have placed
your order you can submit your users on the User Submit form.
(see main page). You will then get a provisional month's access
to allow time for payment to be sorted out. If payment takes
longer than a month you can apply to have your provisional access
extended - although you will need to get your finance people
to contact me first with an expected payment date.
Q. I
notice you charge VAT. Can we claim that back?
A. Yes. QuickCalc Ltd is
registered for VAT with Revenues and Customs. Invoices show a
VAT Reg no. Just claim back the VAT element in the normal way
- so long as your org is VAT registered too.
Q. How
is QuickCalc delivered to us?
A. Once you submit your
users' names their details are entered onto the QuickCalc server.
An email with usernames, passwords and access details is then
sent automatically to each individual user.
Q. Suppose
we don't pay?
A. Your account will automatically
suspend and you will no longer be able to access the tools. You
would then need to pay in full before access is returned.
Password security
Q. Can I
share the password with someone else?
A. No. That would definitely
breach the license conditions. It would constitute software piracy
which is against the law. If anyone else wants to use the tools
they can apply for a 30 day trial and - if they like it - they
can pay for a license for themselves.
Q. What
if I share it anyway?
A. The QuickCalc server
automatically detects multiple use of an account. Your account
would be locked and you would not be able to access the tools
again. As you had breached the terms of the license QuickCalc
Ltd would be under no legal or moral obligation to reinstate
your access. Plus we'd notify your manager and your IT department
who would probably not be very happy.
Q. Can
I access the tools from a different PC though?
A. The QuickCalc tools
can be accessed from any PC with internet access. However if
you intend to use the tools from more than 2 PCs on a regular
basis you should let us know. The QuickCalc server may interpret
these multiple access points as being an attempt at sharing access
with others. If we know about it we can take steps to prevent
you from being denied access.
Using Q. Does the QuickCalc
toolset change any files on my system?
A. No. Its just a web page.
All the calculations are done using JavaScript which is already
included in your internet browser.
Q. Will
my computer blow up /slow down when I install QuickCalc?
A. No. Its just a web page.
Q. Will
QuickCalc run on my Windows | Mac | Linux | other OS?
A. Yes. Its just a web
page.
Q. Does
QuickCalc understand about income disregards?
A. There is a certain amount
of help with disregards. The HB/CTB calcs have options to select
various disregards for earned income. There is
also the separate worksheet for unearned income
which calculates disregards. And because the 16/30hr disregard
for HB is so complicated, there is a separate QuickCalc just
for that.
One thing the QuickCalcs never do however, is to apply
a disregard based on what you label a payment. Make sure you
have used a disregard tool or deducted disregards before
entering the income into the entitlement calcs. If an income
is completely disregarded, don't enter it at all (or enter as
zero). You could also enter a disregard as a minus figure in
the income boxes if you're a detail person.
Q. What
should I do if I think something is incorrect.
A. Let us know. We'll look into it, correct it, and publish
any corrected tools on the web within 24 hours normally. This
hasn't happened in a long while though.
Other
Q. Should
I put public links to QuickCalc on our website?
A. No. That would definitely
breach the license conditions. The current QuickCalc tools are
not suitable for public use anyway. If you want to link to the
site to let people know what tools you use please contact us to let us know and please only use links to the main
menu - as any other link would bypass the terms and conditions
page. Link details at bottom of page»
Q. Are
there any plans for a QuickCalc tool suitable for the public?
A. Yes. The homepage now
features a link to the "Public QuickCalc". This is
suitable for the general public to use - or those with no experience
of working with benefits. The tool calculates weekly entitlement
to HB and CTB.
Q. How
are the QuickCalcs made?
A. We sit and enter millions
of zeros and ones manually. 010011 0001 10101101 0101110 111001
0010 110010101 0 1 10110101 0 1 000111 1 001 etc.
It takes years.
Q. How
are they really made though?
A. We write the software
directly onto the hard disk with a small magnet.
Q. Come
on...
A. In a word JavaScript.
Its a programming language with mathematical functions built
in. Your web browser is already capable of using JavaScript functions
so there's no need to install anything.
